The Next Step

Have you ever come to a crossroad and wondered where you should take your next step? Sometimes we know that a decision about our future is approaching and sometimes because of a sudden change of circumstances, we come to that crossroad without much warning. Regardless of how it happens, when the next step causes us to face a change in our lives, we can feel very unsure of ourselves, maybe even confused. Like Job we may ask, “Does He not see my ways and number all my steps? (31:4)

Jared Wells a teenager fighting cystic fibrosis, when diagnosed with lung cancer, initially decided to “give up.” He couldn’t face that road ahead, so he stopped taking his medications and decided to just wait for what he considered inevitable. However with his grandfather’s encouragement he decided to put up a fight. He decided the way back to health was to get stronger and so his first step was to walk into a gym. Then he decided on an unusual next step – gratitude. Jared said, “If you’re constantly worried … it makes it really hard to keep your mind clear and looking at things positively. If you’re grateful for those small things, it makes being positive and change much easier.”[1] Jared started the program at 117 pounds but after five years of giving it all he had to give, he not only defeated the cancer, but became a body builder and inspired thousands.

The Bible tells us, “For now we see through a glass darkly ….” (1 Corinthians 13:12). God acknowledges that we cannot see the road ahead. He encourages us to, “walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7). He promises, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go.” (Psalm 32:8) and asks that we, “Give thanks in all circumstances.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

We may not be able to see past the crossroad and down the road ahead, but we can trust the God who can. We can also count on His help to walk that path and to know how to maneuver past any obstacles in our way. We may be thinking of an easier journey but He’s thinking about the destination.

Are you unsure of the next step. Today’s world surely has come up with many obstacles we never imagined we’d face, but like Jared, let’s not give up but give it all we have to give, and find joy along the way by being grateful for the small things. Let’s turn to the One who can and will help us along the road we cannot see. He knows the best next step.

Get to know God and you’ll discover that His love for you is so great, He’ll do whatever it takes so that you aren’t left at the crossroads. Jesus already has, by giving His life so that you could live. All He asks is that you believe in Him and let Him help you. That’s the true first step. The rest are easy.
