Can We Find Peace?

What is peace. Webster’s dictionary describes it as a state of tranquility, harmony, and quiet.[1] Word Hippo gives as its opposite: war, rivalry, hate, tension and disagreement.[2] Peace may not be synonymous with love, but its opposite, war, is surely akin to hate.

God tells us that peace comes from Him and He Himself is our peace. (Eph 2:14). He calls us to do our best to be at peace with all (Rom 12:18), but knowing that we may have some problems, He tells us to give any anxiety to Him and He will cover us with His peace (Phil 4:6-7). The world may give us trouble, but He says we can have peace because He has overcome the world. (John 16:33) Just trusting Him will bring peace. (Is 26:3) Our faith in Him brings peace (Rom 5:1) and His Spirit gives us peace as a fruit of the work He does in us. (Gal 5:22) All we have to do is to be willing and His peace will come. (Col 3:15)

So why don’t we have peace? I think it’s our focus. It’s easy to “know” what peace is and how to find it, but when we’re down in the trenches, and the enemy surely is at war trying to keep us from God, sometimes it’s hard to see a future filled with peace. And today that peaceful world seems to be getting further and further away.

Have we ever truly had that peace? Has there ever been a time in the history of the world where there was peace, a peace that lasted. Yes, there were times in the far past without a recorded war, but those times were fleeting, and in this present age, there has always been some sort of violent skirmish somewhere. We have not been without war.

Our focus needs to change, not from the present to the past, but from the present to the future – our home in heaven. There we will find no disagreements leading to arguments, no tension leading to animosity, and no greed leading to war. There will be no icy stares, put downs, broken treaties, nuclear tests or war games. There will be no hatred but only the unconditional love that leads to a permanent peace and happiness beyond description. Best yet, our King will be the Prince of Peace.

Can we find peace? Yes! But only in Jesus. You can’t get to heaven on your own. No amount of good works, nothing we can do, will pay the price for all our mistakes, our sins. Only Jesus could do that, and He did. All you need to do is to admit that you need the gift He offers, believe in Him, and call out to Him to take over.

If you aren’t sure that you’re headed to heaven, just look to the God who loves you, and you will find true peace.

“For a Child will be born to us, a Son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His Name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6-7
