An Impossible Dream?

Some have said, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade”. I’ve never been a fan of that advice. Sometimes life doesn’t give you lemons, but something much worse. Sometimes all you can do is endure the present moment and hope for a better tomorrow, even if that better tomorrow is years away. You can’t think about that. You can’t even think about tomorrow. All you can do is endure. That’s it. No lemonade. Just endure.

There are children being abused, wives in danger of losing their life, others whose dreams have been squashed or even killed by those over them. Maybe you can’t relate, but there’s someone under a bridge or sleeping in a car who can. It’s easy to say, “Pick yourself up” but not as easy to do so, especially if you’ve been told over and over you aren’t good enough or you can’t. Many have never heard those words but have been taught that lesson from others who learned it before them, perhaps in the same way.

When you go to the grocery store, they could be walking beside or behind you. They may be sitting in the next pew in Church. They could be your coworker or mailman or garbage collector.

There’s a song that originated in the play “Man Of La Mancha” called “The Impossible Dream”. In it, Don Quixote tells of his desire to “beat the unbeatable foe … bear with unbearable sorrow …try when your arms are too weary … to be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause.” This is his impossible dream. Without knowing it, we may be seeing that man or woman of La Mancha – bearing with unbearable sorrow, persevering when their arms are too weary, trying to beat an unbeatable foe. This may be you. It was me. I think that in some way, we all have our impossible dreams, our unbeatable foes, and perhaps some – unbearable sorrows.

The change came for me when I gave up my impossible dream. I gave it to Jesus. Only He can “march into to hell for a heavenly cause”. He already has. He fought satan, hell and the grave and came out victorious. The quest is over. He has the victor’s crown.

He’s not asking you to defeat an unbeatable foe. He’s asking you to embrace what He’s already done. Believe in Him. Accept His gift of rescue, His salvation, and march into heaven with Him. Then tell others. Help others. There are so many out there who need to dream.

Does it seem an impossible dream to face tomorrow or even the next moment. When life hands you lemons, give the lemons to Jesus. I won’t say it will be easy, but if you dream His seemingly impossible dream, it will come true after all.

“Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our LORD, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever.” Jude 1:24,25.
