Superheroes

Have you ever seen any of the superhero characters? Superman of old could leap the tallest building in a single bounce. Spiderman throws his web and jumps as far as he desires. The bionic man could run faster than any man or any human invention. If you think of something you would like to do, there’s a superhero who could do it, too.

Could there be a superhero in you? I’m not talking about running fast or jumping over buildings, but what about jumping over the hurdles in our own society? What about running after the one thing you desire most to achieve? Wouldn’t it be nice to have that dream come true?

Jesus said, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)

There was a mother who needed food for herself and her son. There were fishermen who spent the night fishing but caught nothing. A fisherman needs to catch fish to support his family. A mother’s deepest concern is usually for her child. These are needs, but what about our dreams? If God, who supplied the mother with flour and oil in containers that never went empty for three years and the fishermen with so much fish, their boat was in danger of capsizing, if He cares for the mother and the fishermen’s needs, does he care for our deepest desires?

God says that He puts His desire in our hearts, so our deepest desire is probably a gift from Him. If God planted it there, it only makes sense that He would water it, nurture it, and bring it to fruition.

You say you can’t accomplish what you dream? God can. That’s the superhero in you – God’s Spirit, giving you the desire to do His will, whether it’s teaching or tutoring a child, writing books, leading a town council meeting, caring for someone in a nursing home or hospital, or caring for a child at home, starting a fund drive for flood victims, building a house for Habitat for Humanity, protecting our cities or our country, or speaking out against child abuse. It may be starting a company that will fill a void and help others grow, learn, or do their own work and support their families. God plants the desire and empowers us to bring it to pass. We are all cogs working together to make a better world. We can be the superheroes of our day.

Perhaps you’re not sure if you have God’s Spirit in you. It’s easy to be sure. Do you believe that Jesus is God who came to earth to pay the price for your sin? Have you asked Him to help you and guide you as you navigate through life, in essence, asking the Wisest One of all to be the boss of your life? If you have, He will.

What is your deepest dream? If it’s God’s dream too, He will work through you, and maybe you’ll find that you’re leaping that tallest building (or hurdle) after all.

“Delight yourself in the LORD; and He will give you the desires of your heart. commit your way to the LORD, trust also in Him, and He will do it.” (Psalm 38:4-5)
