Feeling Smart Yet?

My joy in life comes in part from teaching 3-5 year-old children in the children’s ministry in my Church. They are a riot! We start out with a snack, and since their attention span is about 3-5 minutes (1 minute for each year of age) they’re busy chomping animal crackers and drinking juice while I’m trying to explain our current Bible story. They finish their snack about the time I’m finished with the story, so we sing and practice some sign language we’re learning. The last is going slow but eventually they will be able to sign and sing “Jesus loves me”.  Hopefully. Or maybe not, but this teacher won’t give up easily.

We just finished learning about Solomon, a very wise (smart in “toddlerese” terms) man who was also a king (a boss like Mom and Dad). We learned that God made Solomon smart, and God can make us smart too. They want to be smart. Their teacher would like to be smart, too.

Recently I read an article which talked about how much there is to learn out there, that is how smart we could aim to be. Can we be as smart as Solomon? The Bible said that no one was as wise, or would be, as him. But how smart can we hope to be?

Here’s what an article said about what is called the “Knowledge Doubling Curve”. Up until 1900, knowledge doubled every 100 years. By 1945, knowledge doubled every 25 years. Until recently, the rate was every 13 months; however, that number is expected to change to every 12 hours because of the effect of the internet. From every 100 years to every 12 hours! [1] I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling dumber all the time, in fact, dumber and dumber every 12 hours.

But God ….  I don’t have to be as smart or wise as Solomon. God is wiser.

The Bible tells us that in the end times, knowledge will increase, but also that we will run to and fro. Knowledge isn’t necessarily something to run after, but wisdom is, especially if we are indeed in the end times. Because of Jesus and the price he paid to cover our sins, if we admit we are a sinner, believe that He died for us, and that He is LORD of our lives, and call out to Him, we will have His Holy Spirit in us. Wisdom greater than Solomon! Something we need today.

So, are you feeling smart yet? If not, I hope you decide to choose Jesus and have His Holy Spirit in you and His wisdom to help you move through your day and these end times.

“Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament …. But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.” Daniel 12:3a, 4 NKJV
